The invention relates to a power screw driver with a vacuumscrew pick-up feature. In particular the invention concerns avacuum screw pic-up type of power screw driver having a movablenose piece connected to a vacuum source and carrying a screwguiding nozzle, wherein the nose piece is spring biased towards a forward screw pick-up position.
A problem related to power screw drivers of this type is toadapt the sub-atmospheric pressure in the nose piece to thethrust force of the nose piece bias spring. In most cases thevacuum level is too high which results in the risk that the nosepiece could be retracted by suction against the action of thebias spring, whereby the screw guiding nozzle loses its guidingeffect on a picked screw and causing the latter to be pushed out of the nozzle by the screw bit.
To solve this problem the vacuum level in the nose piece has tobe adapted to balance the force of the bias spring. In a priorart example this has been made simply by restricting the outputfrom the vacuum source. However, this may rise another problem,namely in cases where a number of screw drivers are connected tothe same vacuum source. In such cases the vacuum force is notadaptable to what is required at each individual screw driver.Depending on different screw driver applications each screwdriver may require a specific suction force to obtain anapplication force suitable for the actual object to beassembled. For instance, a low vacuum level, i.e. a low airpressure in the nose piece, would make the force of the biasspring dominate the suction force which would result in a highapplication force to be used by the operator at screw mountingoperation. This is not desirable since some objects to beassembled via screw mounting operations, like printed circuitboards, are not rigid enough to withstand such high application force.
P20-l47l7-l4l2lO One conceivable way to individually adapt the vacuum level towhat is required and/or suitable for a specific screw driverapplication may be to provide an adjustable air mixing valve onthe conduit connecting each screw driver to the vacuum source.This problem solution is disadvantageous in that it requiresspecially designed conduits including this type of valves and ifa conduit is exchanged for another one or another screw driveris connected to a conduit having a certain valve setting thevacuum level in the screw driver would be erroneous. This way ofsolving the problem also causes a somewhat awkward adjustment procedure.
It is an object of the invention to provide a vacuum screw pick-up type of power screw driver having a movable spring biasednose piece and a vacuum adjusting device by which is ensured an individual vacuum level setting for each screw driver.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a vacuumscrew pick-up type of power screw driver having a movable springbiased nose piece and an adjustable device for individualadaptation of the vacuum generated suction force in the nose piece to the thrust force of the nose piece biasing spring.
The above mentioned objects of the invention are reached byproviding a power screw driver with a vacuum screw pic-upfeature and comprising a housing, a motor driven screw bit, anda movable nose piece with a screw guiding nozzle, wherein thenose piece is connected to a vacuum source and spring biased inthe screw driver application direction, wherein the housing isprovided with a valve device for adjustment of the vacuum level within the nose piece.
Still further objects and advantages of the invention will appear from the following specification and claims.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is described below with reference to the accompanying drawing.

Fig 2 shows on a larger scale a longitudinal section through thefront end of the screw driver in Fig. l including the vacuumconduit connection.
Fig. 3 shows a longitudinal section somewhat different from Fig.2 illustrating the vacuum adjusting device in its fully openposition.
Fig. 4 shows the same section as Fig. 3 but illustrates the vacuum adjusting device in its closed position.
The power screw driver shown in the drawings comprises a housinglO with a non-illustrated electric motor which is powered viacable connection ll and drivingly connected to a screw bit l3.At its front end the housing lO is provided with a nose piece l4carries a screw guiding nozzle l5 and surrounds the screw bitl3. The nose piece l4 is longitudinally movable relative to thehousing lO and forms a part of an activation chamber l6 which isconnected to a non-illustrated vacuum source via a conduit and aconduit connection l7. In the activation chamber l6 there isprovided a spring l8 which is arranged to exert a forwarddirected bias force on the nose piece l4, in order to move thenose piece l4 relative the housing lO, towards an extendedposition. The vacuum conduit connection l7 is situated on alateral service block 20 and communicates with activation chamber l6 via a circumferential groove 22 in the housing lO.
As apparent from Fig. l a valve device 23 is provided on theservice block 20 adjacent the conduit connection l7 and isintended for adjustment of the vacuum level within theactivation chamber l6. The valve device 23 comprises a valveelement 24 and an air inlet passage 25 communicating with theambient atmosphere. The valve element 24 is rotatable in theservice block 20 between an open position (Fig. 3) and a closedposition (Fig.4). For that purpose the valve element 24 is provided with an external slot 27 for engagement with a screw P20-14717-141210 driver. At its inner end the valve element 24 is formed with aland 28 shaped like a circle segment and arranged to block theair inlet passage 25 in the closed position of the valve element 24. See Fig. 4.
In operation, the power screw driver is connected to a vacuumsource via a conduit connected to the housing 10 via the conduitconnection 17, whereby the pressure inside the activationchamber 16 is lowered and propagates to the nose piece 14 andthe screw guiding nozzle 15 via the groove 22 and the activationchamber 16. The sup-atmospheric pressure in the nozzle 15 makesit possible to pick up a screw 30 by suction and bring it intocontact with the screw bit 13. Then, the screw driver is ready to start a screw mounting operation.
The sub-atmospheric pressure accomplished in the activationchamber 16 exerts an inwardly directed force on the nose piece14, and due to the bias force by the spring 18 the nose piece 14is prevented from being moved backwards into the activationchamber 16. However, when the screw driver is brought intoengagement with an object to be assembled and having the nozzle15 pressed against the surface of the object the nose piece 14is pressed backwards into the activation chamber 16 against theaction of the bias spring 18. Thereby, the picked-up screw 30 ispushed forwards and rotated by the screw bit 13 for a mountingoperation. As the screw 30 is properly mounted on the object thepower screw driver motor is stopped and the tool is lifted offthe object, whereby the nose piece 14 is returned to its forwardrest or start position by the spring 18 against the suction force still acting by the vacuum in the activation chamber 16.
In order to adjust and set the vacuum level within theactivation chamber 16 and thereby accomplish a balance betweenthe bias force of the spring 18 and the accomplished suctionforce the valve element 24 is rotated to open up to a certainextent the inlet passage 25, whereby a certain amount of atmospheric air is lead into the activation chamber 16. This P20-l47l7-l4l2lO results in a lowering of the vacuum level in the activationchamber l6 and a decreased suction force on the nose piece l4 isaccomplished. This means that the suction force will not dominate the bias force of the spring l8.
By adjusting and setting the valve device 23 it is possible tobalance the sub-atmospheric pressure in the activation chamberl6 against the bias force of the spring l8 to thereby minimizethe required application pressure of the screw driver onto anobject during screw mounting operations and at the same time reduce the risk for the nose piece l4 to be retracted into the activation chamber due to a too high vacuum level.
It is to be understood that the embodiments of the invention arenot limited to the described example but may be freely varied within the scope of the claims.

Claims (5)
[1] 1. A power screw driver with a vacuum screw pick-upfeature, comprising a housing (10) connected to a vacuum source,a motor driven screw bit (13), a nose piece (14) with a screwguiding nozzle (15), wherein the nose piece (14) is movablysupported on the housing (10) and exposed to a suction forcegenerated by the vacuum source, and a spring (18) arranged tobias the nose piece (14) towards an extended position, c h a r a c t e r i z e d in that the housing (10) is providedwith a valve device (23) for adjustment of the suction force acting on the nose piece (14).
[2] 2. A power screw driver according to claim 1, wherein thehousing (10) is formed with an activation chamber (16) partlydefined by the nose piece (14) and connected to the vacuumsource, said bias spring (18) being located in said activation chamber (16).
[3] 3. A power screw driver according to claim 1 or 2,wherein said valve device (23) comprises an air inlet passage(25) communicating at one end with the atmosphere and at anopposite end with said activation chamber (16), and a movablevalve element (24) arranged to control the flow of atmosphericair through said air inlet passage (25) to thereby adjust the vacuum level in said activation chamber (16).
[4] 4. A power screw driver according to claim 3, whereinsaid valve element (24) is successively movable between a closed position and an open position.
[5] 5. A power screw driver according to claim 4, whereinsaid valve element (24) is formed with a circle segment-shapedland (28) arranged to block completely said inlet passage (25)in said closed position and uncover completely said inlet passage (25) in said open position.
